Man Improve?

Two hundred years ago many of our ancestors thought that man and mankind could improve. They believed that man could reform society and that we could progress. They believed that man could learn to cooperate to that end. They thought that distribution of powers and equality according to generally accepted law would be an improvement. They were lovers of reason, wisdom, liberty, and happiness. They thought that resistance to ignorance and support of learning were virtuous acts.


Two hundred years ago many of our ancestors saw industry as a way to enrich a few and to lower per unit cost. They saw the market as a no holds barred way to do onto them before they do onto us. They believed that the poor would always be, so exploit them and let them go to hell.


Three hundred years ago some of our ancestors saw the short term concentration of capital as useful to the progress of mankind through great works. They also saw that a lawless money marked kept good men from responsibility and gave bad men free reign to exploit who they would as the would.

Demand

Demand is you and I willing to buy and having money to do so. Without 'demand' there is practically no need for economics or finance. It is you and I who provide demand. The problem right now is that we don't have enough money to buy enough. Some of us don't even have jobs.

So we, the people, don't have jobs at which we can earn enough to create enough demand to give healthy impetus to the wheels of economy --- so to speak.

What do we do? You may have noted that we are a nation. There are some rights and abilities that nations have which an individual does not. We, as a nation, can collect taxes, for example. We can allocate the use of those takes in accord with the will of the people. If we say that we want an infrastructure which allows us to be better competitors among the nations of the world, we can have money allocated to building that infrastructure.

Of what might such an infrastructure consist?
~ abundant water appropriate for health industry and individuals,
~ efficient system and mechanism for efficient disposition(including recycling) for efficient industry and healthy citizens,
~ abundant health promoting energy for industry and all,
~ an excellently administered public health system(including research) so that industry has a health work force.

You can probably think of other beneficial infrastructure projects likely to benefit us all. Some people liked Ike because he encouraged the building of our nation highway system.

We can use our national money to employ ourselves in bettering our national infrastructure by doing what is necessary to have abundant good water at a reasonable cost well into the future.

We can spend the money we earn improving our national infrastructure and so create the demand which motivates the economy.

It's not likely to happen unless we make it happen.

The tax money is taken from you by powerful functionaries, who give it to a few special persons in a selected country. "Given" may not be the best word, for usually a more or less modest interest must be paid on it. That interest is usually collected from vulnerable people in the selected country. Most often the money is not actually delivered: the 'aid' is more an extension of credit.

The credit extended is seldom of a general sort, but rather of  special sort. It is often credit with two or three designated companies or dealers. The agreement often is that the credit must be used with, say, his grain dealer and that arms dealer.

If you were to watch the money, you would see it leave the pockets of the many tax payers here, make a fast pass through the hands of a very few 'helpful' persons in the foreign country, and then be deposited in the pockets of a few favored men here. Often the process is even more efficient. The money goes directly from the pockets of  the many here to the pockets of a very few here and some grain or guns arrive in the selected country.

There are lots of interesting little wrinkles. For example, the arms may be used to kill or threaten people of that foreign country so as to keep that country 'stable' for US trade.


For the curious, I favor tax and foreign trade when I know that you, my fellow citizen, are practicing your informed civic duties.

Taxes

I thought that it was good that we, the people, cooperate by pooling our money to improve our chances for well-being and happiness. I did think that we would keep a better eye on it.


I still think that such cooperation can contribute to our health and happiness. However, letting other people use our to pay a few Colombians kill many Colombians does not make me happy. Letting a few people in the U.S. pay a few Pakistanis kill other Pakistanis in their own country does not seem to be contributing to my good health.
