Projection

We most often assume that the future will be a straight line projection of the past, usually the most recent past.

So, as persons of some understanding, we will expect out fellows to be surprised by deviations from that projected line.

When do the affairs of men proceed in a straight line? We feel proud when a handful of us run a hundred yards in a straight line.
