Talking of toilets reminds me of the discussion about the direction of the swirl in the bowl north of the equator as opposed to the swirl south of the equator. Those who talk as though they know something speak of the Coriolis effect. The Coriolis effect seems interesting but it is engineering and design which rule in this case. The direction that the bowl's rim-jets are pointed is the determining factor controlling swirl direction, not the Coriolis effect.
