I've selected three books from my shelves to take to South America with me:
Monkey Translated from Chinese by Arthur Waley. I guess it could be called a picaresque folk novel, but there is more to it than that. It is a fun fantasy and a funny fable. It's adventurous allegories welded into an artistic whole. It's been highly popular for 500 years. I've just started it, but bet it offers multiple levels of meaning and wisdom while being very entertaining.
Meetings With Remarkable Men translated from Russian by the author, George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff. Gurdjieff reminds me a bit of a few interested and interesting picaros I met in my early travels. He seems an accomplised liver of life, and interesting teacher, and a good story teller.
The Magic of Dialogue by Daniel Yankelovich. It's one of the several works on the skills and practices of dialogue that have been published i the last couple of decades. According to a blurb, Bill Moyers seems to like it.

Left "The Magic of Dialogue" in Uruguay. Hope someone there benefits from it; it's great and valuable work.
